Fall 2009 Safety Message

The San Diego State University Police Department would like to welcome everyone to the Fall 2009 Semester. This can be a hectic, yet exciting time; however, it is important to remember your safety and security is our primary concern. Please assist us in this task by reviewing and living these safety tips.

  • Remember to lock your car and secure all valuables out of sight. If you have security devices for your vehicle, i.e. Clubs, alarms, or vehicle immobilizers, use them.

  • Do not leave items of value unattended ever.

  • Pay attention to your surrounding; avoid distractions. Immediately report any suspicious activity to the University Police Department at 619-594-1991 (when in doubt, call).

  • Use the “buddy system” to look out for each other. Safety escorts are available dusk to dawn to and from any campus location. To use this service, call 619-594-6659.

  • Our 24-hour Police phone number is 619-594-1991. Please program this number into your cell phone.  Remember, you can obtain police, fire, or medical emergency services by dialing 911 from any campus phone. You may also obtain emergency services by activating one of the many campus "blue light" emergency duress phones.

  • We are located in the Public Safety Building at the intersection of 55th Street and Remington Road, across from the Aztec Recreation Center. Our lobby is open from 9:00 AM to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. The police department is operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

  • The Parking Office and Key Issue Office are housed in the Public Safety Building. Please note their telephone numbers; Parking Office: 594-6671, and Key Issue: 594-1992, should you require those services.

NOVEMBER 9, 2009

RE: Indecent Exposure

This bulletin is posted to advise you of an incident that concerns the safety of the university community. Please take all necessary precautions.

On November 9, 2009 at about 11:30 a.m., an SDSU student was the victim of an indecent exposure.  The suspect, who was unknown to the victim, began talking to the victim in the SDSU West Commons building.  After a short conversation the victim willingly walked with the suspect to the SDSU Music building.  There the suspect and victim continued talking and after several minutes, the suspect exposed his genitals to the victim.  The victim was not threatened or touched in any way and there were no injuries sustained during the incident.   The suspect was last seen leaving the music building. (SDSU PD case# 09-2334).

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:
The suspect is described as follows:  Caucasian male, 5 feet 5 inches tall, 35-40 years of age, balding with bright blonde hair.  The suspect had yellow teeth and a strong musky smell.  The suspect was last seen wearing a long sleeved black button up shirt with silver stripes over a black t-shirt with “Del Mar” written in silver lettering.  He was wearing black pants with a brown belt.  The suspect was carrying a black folder and a black duffle bag.

RE: Sexual Battery

This bulletin is posted to advise you of an incident that concerns the safety of the university community. Please take all necessary precautions.

On Sunday, October 18, 2009 at approximately 1:10 a.m., a female student reported that she was attacked by six males, held down on the ground, had an unknown liquid poured into her mouth, and sexually assaulted in a dirt lot behind Aztec Corner apartments at 5500 Montezuma Road. The victim said she recognized three of the suspects from an earlier encounter where the males were harassing the victim and two of her friends as they were walking to a party.

Be alert of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to SDSU Police immediately.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:

The suspects are described as six black male adults, college-aged, wearing baseball hats.

RE: Strong Arm Robbery

This bulletin is posted to advise you of an incident that concerns the safety of the university community. Please take all necessary precautions.

On October 7, 2009 at approximately 1:30 a.m., a suspect forcefully took a purse and two cellular phones simultaneously from two victims at the corner of College Avenue and Lindo Paseo. The suspect fled on foot northbound on College Avenue and got into a waiting vehicle which left northbound on College Avenue towards the I-8 freeway. The suspect vehicle is described as a light tan colored 4-door compact car with a rear spoiler, possibly a Toyota Corolla.

Because the crime happened on a city street it is being investigated by the San Diego Police Department (SDPD case #09- 052152). The crime alert is posted because of the close proximity of the crime to University property/housing.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:
The suspect is described as a male, about 25 years old, half Hispanic, half black, stocky build, wearing a black sweatshirt and blue jeans.
The vehicle driver’s description is unknown.

RE: Strong Arm Robbery

This bulletin is posted to advise you of an incident that concerns the safety of the university community. Please take all necessary precautions.

On October 2, 2009 at approximately 8:30 a.m., an unknown suspect(s) walking eastbound on Cuicaccalli Walk from the pedestrian bridge took the victim’s iPhone from her hand by force and fled on foot to an awaiting gold colored sedan parked in the east alley of 5100 College Avenue.  The suspect(s) vehicle is described as a gold colored sedan with the possible California plate of 5WLN940.  The suspect(s) fled from the east alley of 5100 College Avenue toward northbound College Avenue.  SDSU case # 09-2023.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:
Suspect #1 is described as a black male wearing a red hat and a white t-shirt.
Suspect#2 is described only as a male.

Please be aware of your surrounding area and report any suspicious activity to the University Police.

RE: Attempted Strong Arm Robbery

This bulletin is posted to advise you of an incident that concerns the safety of the university community. Please take all necessary precautions.

On October 1, 2009 at 8:00 p.m., a female student was walking near West Commons when an unknown male approached her from behind and grabbed her purse, attempting to pull it from her shoulder. The victim held on to her purse and sprayed the suspect with pepper spray (mace), causing the suspect to let go of the purse. The suspect kicked the victim in the leg and fled toward Scripps Cottage. The suspect's attempt to take the purse was unsuccessful.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:

The suspect was described as wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt with his face covered and had a dark blue or black pair of basketball shorts with a white stripe down the side of the leg.

RE: Sexual Assault

This bulletin is posted to advise you of an incident that concerns the safety of the university community. Please take all necessary precautions.

On Thursday, September 24, 2009 at approximately 5:30 p.m., a female student reported that she was sexually assaulted in SDSU Parking Structure 6 while walking in a stairwell. The suspect was passing the victim in the stairwell and grabbed her buttocks over her clothing as she walked by. The victim confronted the suspect who left the location walking west. The suspect was not known to the victim.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:

The suspect is described as a Middle Eastern male adult, 18 to 20 years old, 5'10" to 5'11" tall, 170-180 pounds, wearing a blue t-shirt, blue jeans, and reading glasses.

The SDSU Police Department encourages all members of the community to be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to SDSU Police immediately.

RE: Sexual Assault - Rape

This bulletin is posted to advise you of an incident that concerns the safety of the university community. Please take all necessary precautions.

On Friday, September 11, 2009 in the early morning hours, a female victim reported being raped in the 5000 block of College Place. The suspect is described as a white male adult, 18 to 20 years old, medium height, 160-180 pounds, wearing a white t-shirt with a logo or grey stripe on the front, blue jeans, and clean-shaven with dirty blond hair. Details about the crime are limited.

San Diego Police Department is conducting the investigation.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:

The suspect is described as a white male adult, 18 to 20 years old, medium height, 160-180 pounds, wearing a white t-shirt with a logo or grey stripe on the front, blue jeans, and clean-shaven with dirty blond hair.

On September 9, 2009 at 9:28 p.m., an unknown male was seen in the quad area of an apartment complex in the 5600 block of Montezuma Road video taping tenants of an apartment taking a shower through the bathroom window of the apartment.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:
The suspect is described as a white male adult in his mid twenties with medium length brown hair, wearing a red, short sleeved t-shirt and blue jeans.

All residents are reminded to ensure all doors and gates are closed and locked at all times.

JULY 26, 2009

RE: Robbery

This bulletin is posted to advise you of an incident that concerns the safety of the university community. Please take all necessary precautions.

On July 26, 2009 at around 9:00 p.m., a group of three juvenile females took two cell phones belonging to two juveniles attending a camp at SDSU.  The incidents occurred on Cuicacalli Walkway and in the north alley of 5700 Montezuma Road, near the Aztec Corner Apartments. The suspects used force and intimidation to take the property from the victims.  Two of the suspects were detained by Trolley Security and identified by the victims and witnesses. Both suspects were arrested by SDSU Police. The third suspect remains unidentified and at large.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:

The unidentified suspect was described as an African American female juvenile, about 5’6” tall and slender.  The suspect was wearing a grey shirt, blue jeans, silver sandals and a black and white checkered jacket.

RE: Attempted Armed Robbery

This bulletin is posted to advise you of an incident that concerns the safety of the university community. Please take all necessary precautions.

On May 23, 2009 at about 11:23 p.m., a non-SDSU student was the victim of an attempted robbery in the 4900 block of Catoctin Drive. One suspect displayed an unknown make and model handgun and demanded the victim's purse. The victim refused and the suspects left, last seen driving north on Catoctin Drive toward Montezuma Road (San Diego Police Department incident #52532). There were no injuries sustained during the incident. The other suspect involved was the driver of the vehicle.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:

The suspects are described as follows: #1: The passenger, African-American male, 18 to 25 years of age, tall and thin, wearing a black jacket. #2: The driver, no further details. The vehicle was an unknown make/model sedan; no further details.

RE: Armed Robbery

This bulletin is posted to advise you of an incident that concerns the safety of the university community. Please take all necessary precautions.

On May 1, 2009 at about 9:58 p.m., five SDSU students were robbed off-campus, on the 4700 block of Catoctin Drive (Montezuma Park).  Money and wallets were taken from the victims.  There were no injuries sustained during the incident.  The two suspects displayed a handgun and were last seen running north on Catoctin Drive toward Montezuma Road.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:
The suspects are described as follows:  Suspect #1 - African-American male, 6'4" or 6'5", 200 lbs., light skin, wearing either a dark colored or gray hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, and carrying a silver handgun.  Suspect #2 - African-American male, 5'5" or 5'7", dark skin, and wearing all dark colored clothing.  Both males were 25 to 30 years old.
